The message is simple:
I am not just a sex worker, I am so much more.
Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening Diseases (WORLD) is proud to host “I Am a Sex Worker”, a photojournalism project sharing portraits and narratives of female, male, and transgender sex workers in Cape Town, South Africa. Created by Ian Kwok and Vivian Nguyen, both students at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and in partnership with Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Task-force (SWEAT), the goal of “I Am a Sex Worker” is to give a platform to the voices often unheard, often women. These photos and narratives reflect the real lived experiences of sex workers who have agreed to share their stories in hopes of combating the dehumanizing, sensationalized media representation of the sex work industry and those who participate in it. WORLD believes that every voice is powerful and we would like to share these stories with our local community.
