What’s New at WORLD: National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

March 10th marked National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. For this monumental day for women and girls across the country, WORLD teamed up with AIDS Healthcare Foundation and community partners Cal-PEP and Allen Temple to Talk About SEX.

 Let’s Talk About SEX: An Intergenerational Dialogue, brought younger and older women together at Everett and Jones in Jack London Square for dinner and to discuss healthy relationships, women’s health concerns, safer sex practices, and women empowerment.

With the fabulous Christie James as our DJ, WORLD’s very own superstar Nikia Harris as our host, Denise Jones, and Gerri Robinson as presenters, and Kristina Wong as our organizer, we held a fantastic event!

 Our evening featured condom art, dating games, prizes, a community organizational health fair, Q and A with AHF’s Dr. Lisha Wilson, RN Monica Arceneaux, Therapist Elizabeth Hawkins and close to 75 attended from all ages laughing and learning. The event is still being talked about and it fills our heart with great joy!

Community Researchers Engaging Women (CREW) 

Early April, WORLD conducted a two-day skill building training for women in the community to become peer researchers for our exciting new advocacy program. Community Researchers Engaging Women (CREW) is a Participatory Action Research project at WORLD funded by the Ford Foundation designed to train and empower women to address gaps in health care services for women in Alameda County.

During this two-day training at Cal-PEP, women were taught the principles of Community Based Participatory Action Research, social determinates, the vision for the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the Affordable Care Act, Advocacy Themes for Women, Empowerment Theory, what it means to be a Consumer Advocate, and interview skills.

 This year’s retreat will take place April 27-28, 2015 at the beautiful Villa Maria del Mar retreat site in Santa Cruz, CA . This wellness event provides HIV+ women with education, stress management, and the opportunity to build individual networks of support. Attendees have come from around the world to attend our retreats and we look forward to meeting our new attendees.
